2014 World’s Ugliest Dog – Peanut

PETALUMA, Calif. (AP) — It’s that time of year again when dogs with unusually large heads, hairless bodies and other oddities compete to be the World’s Ugliest Dog.

This year’s winner? A 2-year-old mutt named Peanut, whose wild white and brown hair, bulging eyes and protruding teeth belie his sweet, energetic personality.

Although Peanut is healthy now, his owner, Holly Chandler of Greenville, North Carolina, says he was seriously burned as a puppy, resulting in bald patches all over his body.

Chandler hopes Peanut’s victory will help raise awareness about animal abuse.

“We’re trying to use him as a poster child for what can happen to animals who are abused,” she said.

She plans to use the $1,500 prize to pay for other animals’ veterinary bills.

The contest, held at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California, is in its 26th year.

The dogs are scored by a three-judge panel in several categories, including special or unusual attributes, personality and natural ugliness.

The past five winners have included a duck-footed beagle, boxer and basset hound mix with a waddle, a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix with a protruding tongue and short tufts of hair and a Chihuahua with a missing eye and a camel’s back.

2013 World’s Ugliest Dog – Walle

A huge-headed, duck-footed mix of beagle, boxer and basset hound was the upset winner at the 25th annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest.

Walle (WAHL-ee), a 4-year-old mutt from Chico, Calif., who was entered at the last minute, was judged Friday as the most unsightly of 30 dogs at the Northern California competition.

“This dog looked like he’s been photo-shopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals,” judge Brian Sobel said.

Walle overcame the dominance in recent years by nearly hairless Chihuahuas, Chinese cresteds, or combinations of the two.

Owner Tammie Barbee got the dog when he was three months old.

“People come up to me and say that dog is not right,” Barbee said, “but I love him.”

Judges said they were especially impressed by Walle’s bizarre waddle of a walk.

Walle wins $1,500 and will make several network TV appearances next week, including NBC’s “Today” show and ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live.”

The contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds gets worldwide attention, with media from around the world traveling to Petaluma, about 40 miles north of San Francisco.

Organizers say the dogs are judged for their “natural ugliness in both pedigree and mutt classes.”

2012 World’s Ugliest Dog – Mugly

Mugly, a Chinese crested dog, owned by Bev Nicholson of Peterborough, England won the title of “World’s Ugliest Dog” at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California, on Friday, June 22, 2012.

The votes have been counted and a winner has been declared one of the highly anticipated elections of 2012. That’s right, the World’s Ugliest Dog of 2012 has finally been crowned.

Mugly, an 8-year-old Chinese Crested pooch, won the crown, beating out a tough field that included past winners such as 2002 champion Rascal and Princess Abby, a 4-year-old Japanese chin mix that won in 2010 – not to mention perennial contenders such as Icky, who has competed in three past competitions.

According to the contest’s website, Mugly is a rescue dog from the United Kingdom and was “viciously attacked in a park by a group of thugs.”

Mugly is now a “therapy dog working with children,” according to the website.

“I couldn’t speak when they announced Mugly’s name. I didn’t know which way to look. I was shaking as much as the dog,” Mugly’s owner Bev Nicholson said in a news release.

In addition to bragging rights, a trophy and a $1,000 prize was awarded.

Mugly also received 1,236 of more than 3,400 online votes, although the votes do not count towards the winner, which was decided by a panel of judges. The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest is held annually at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, Calif.

2011 World’s Ugliest Dog: Yoda Of Hanford, California

Yoda’s short tufts of hair, protruding tongue, and long, seemingly hairless legs were enough to earn it the World’s Ugliest Dog title at a Northern California fair.

The 14-year-old Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix won the honor Friday night at the 23rd annual contest at the Sonoma Marin Fair.

Owner Terry Schumacher of Hanford, Calif. says the 2-pound dog has come a long way since she was found abandoned behind an apartment building. Schumacher says she first thought the pooch was a rat.

Yoda’s distinction comes a year after a one-eyed Chihuahua named Princess Abby claimed victory. A pedigree Chinese crested won in 2008 and another Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix was the ugliest in 2007.

In past years, the winner’s owner has received a $1,000 check.

Update Mar 15, 2012: Yoda, 2011 World’s Ugliest Dog, died on March 10. Yoda, the world’s ugliest dog, died last weekend at age 15, it was reported today.
